Habitat Builds Wheelchair Accessible Home for a Local Family

Habitat Builds Wheelchair Accessible Home for a Local Family

Having spent the past several years in an over-crowded, mold-infested apartment which was not wheelchair compatible, Luz Lara will receive the keys to her family’s new wheelchair accessible home on Saturday, July 9th, 2016.

The 10:00 am Home Dedication will include comments from Mayor-elect Darrell Steinberg, City Councilmember Allen Warren, the presentation of gifts from the community, words from the homeowner, and a key handoff and ribbon cutting.

Luz is disabled as a result of a spinal condition and in a wheelchair. Her husband, Arturo Cebrero, works for CA Cascade Building Materials to support the family.  The couple is originally from Mexico (Luz is a naturalized citizen and Arturo is a legal resident) and has two children, both of whom were born here.  Their son Everado is four and their daughter Rebeca is one.

The family currently lives in a two-bedroom apartment where Everado and Rebeca have to share a room. The apartment also has a severe mold problem and is not ADA c compliant, making it difficult for Luz to care for her children or do daily activities.

Their Habitat home was made possible through the financial support of JPMorgan Chase, DPR, VSP, and the Attorney Build partners of Downey Brand, Orrick, Porter Scott, and Wilke Fleury; and with the help of over 300 volunteers who put in 4,600 hours building alongside Arturo Cebrero to build the wheelchair accessible home. Some of the features on the home include widened doorways, a special stove with the buttons on the front so Luz doesn’t have to reach over the top and risk burning herself, special bathrooms, and concrete around the sides and back of the house with no-step thresholds so Luz can be with her children while they play in the yard.

Says Luz, “Arturo would show me pictures of the progress of the home, but it never felt real. I almost didn’t believe it.  It finally feels real.”

Following the dedication, Arturu and Luz will purchase their new home from Habitat at cost with a 0% interest, 30-year mortgage. This is Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento’s 133rd completed home in Sacramento and Yolo County.

The Home Dedication will take place at 10am at 2690 Forrest Street Sacramento.  All are welcome.
