Letter from Leah, our President and CEO

12/28/2019

Dear Habitat Family,

As we approach the beginning of a new year and look ahead to breaking new ground and building greater impact in the year to come, I can’t help but reflect on the tremendous and unprecedented year of growth and impact we have been able to achieve together in 2019.

In 2019, our small, passionate team of dreamers, builders, and change makers was made mightier than ever because of you, our Habitat family, an incredible army of individuals and organizations in our community who locked arms with us and made the #CostofHome our battle cry as we united to raise funds, voices, and hammers for our vision of a region where everyone has a safe, decent, and affordable place to call home.

Because of you and that support, in 2019 we were able to serve more individuals through build, repair, and community projects than every other year in our 34-year history combined.

The need for affordable housing in the Sacramento region is vast – thousands of working families are caught in the rental cycle – unable to put down permanent roots or even on the brink of homelessness as they struggle to keep up with rents that are rising faster by percentage in Sacramento than any other city in the nation. Additionally, thousands of low-income senior and veteran homeowners face the looming and ominous threat of homelessness as they struggle with the ability to afford critical home repairs which threaten to send them onto the streets if left unaddressed.

Around this time last year, our team chose a goal for 2019 and that goal was to figure out how to build impact like we had never built before. To each of you who heard the same cries for help within our community and answered them by picking up a hammer, writing a check, donating or shopping at the ReStore, championing Habitat within your organization, or raising your voice and votes to advocate for more resources for affordable housing – I thank you. It is only through collective action and coming together as a community that making a dent in the affordable housing crisis will ever be possible.

As we begin 2020, we look to break ground on historic new developments and partnerships that will continue to stretch ourselves beyond what we could’ve thought possible just years ago. We hope that you will not only join us again- but help us grow our Habitat family as we take on even bigger dreams and make an even bigger impact on addressing the great need to preserve existing affordable housing and build the new units families in our community need.

Thank you for a truly incredible year and for continuing to inspire us to dream bigger!

Sincerely,

Leah Miller
President and CEO, Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento
