Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento to host First-Ever Unity Concert

This November, Habitat will host a first-ever Unity Concert!  The evening will include words from Mayor Darrell Steinberg and local faith and community leaders, as well as performances by the Sacramento Gay Men’s Chorus, the Sacramento Children’s Chorus, St. John’s Lutheran Church Choir, and a very special one night only interfaith collaborative chorus of local faith representatives for a night of song to break down barriers and build hope and homes.

The Unity Concert will be held on Sunday, November 18th at 3:00 pm at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 1701 L St, Sacramento, CA 95811. The free to attend event is open to the public and family friendly.

Event information and RSVPs can be found here.

Led by acclaimed choral director Steven Johnson, this first ever Unity Concert will officially launch the kick off of Habitat’s 2nd Build for Unity Project.

Piloted in 2016, Build for Unity came about when Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento Board Member Jeff vonKaenel sought to find a way to counter a growing national narrative of religious intolerance and tension. As a natural convener for bringing people together, Jeff proposed the Build for Unity project as an opportunity to invite faith groups of all creeds to set aside differences and join together in supporting families in the Sacramento community.

The pilot Build for Unity project brought together more than 180 churches, mosques, temples, synagogues, and individuals to raise $176,000 and build two Habitat homes which were dedicated in June of 2017.  The movement has since spread to more than 30 Habitat affiliates nationwide.

Liudmyla Maksymchuk, a Habitat Build for Unity homeowner, held back tears on the day of her home’s wall raising as she saw “[people of] different ages, different races, different nationalities, and different beliefs work together to help each other.”  She and her family now not only have a safe, decent affordable home, but a springboard to a more secure, stable future.

Pilot Build for Unity Wall Raising with Local Faith Groups

Habitat for Humanity of Greater Sacramento now prepares to launch Build for Unity 2019 with the goal of building two homes side by side with the support of the local community.
